Whitewater raft the South Fork of the American River in the heart of the California Gold Country and try some local California wine. Our American River Whitewater Rafting and Wine Day Tour takes you into the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Descend 8 miles of the American River down Class III rapids such as Meat Grinder, Triple Threat and Troublemaker. During the trip you will float past the historic gold discovery site of Sutter's Mill. After an exciting day of whitewater rafting, taste some local wine before heading back to the city by the bay.

Alcatraz Prison Tour

Before or after the wine tour you can tour Alcatraz on your own time. The tour of Alcatraz includes the 45 minute audio tour "Doing Time: The Alcatraz Cellhouse Tour" which features interviews and stories of prisoners and correctional officers who either worked in or were incarcerated in United States Penitentiary-Alcatraz. Alcatraz Island is a senic 10 minute ferry ride from San Francisco's Embarcadero. The ferry departs from Pier 33 in Fisherman's Wharf so it is very easy to find. Take your time exploring "the rock".

Detailed Itinerary

The day begins with a pick-up from your lodging between 6 and 7 am and heading east across the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge offering great views of the San Francisco skyline, the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island and the East Bay.

We stop for a quick breakfast in the Central Valley. Famous for its rich volcanic soil, the Central Valley is a booming agricultural region known for almonds, grapes, tomatoes, peaches and strawberries. After breakfast we continue our journey up through the cattle and horse ranching foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains to the American River.

Raft the Gold Country

The Class III whitewater action begins immediately with Meatgrinder rapids, followed by other exciting cascades including Racehorse Bend, Rock Garden, Triple Threat and climaxed by a mad dash through the famed Troublemaker rapid. Our trip ends as we pull ashore back at camp where your guides prepare a tasty barbeque lunch.

Class III Excitement

After lunch, there is time to play some beach volleyball and relax by the river. We think it's important to explore the Gold Country, so we will then be heading over to a local winery for some tasting before heading back to the city. The tour ends with a hotel drop off between 6:00 and 6:30 pm.

What Is Provided?

In April and May, the water is cold and the flow rate is higher. Though the weather is warm wetsuits and booties are provided. June thru September, the water is refreshing and the weather is hot so wetsuits are not necessary.

No Experience Necessary

Your safety is our main concern. A brief safety talk is given before anyone gets in the water. The South Fork of the American River is a Class III river system. This is ideal for beginners as well as intermediate paddlers.

Sierra Nevada Foothills

No prior whitewater experience is necessary, however participants are required weigh at least 80 pounds and be at least 8 years of age (younger, lighter children will be permitted with parental consent).

Alcatraz Day

Alcatraz Island is a scenic 10 minute ferry ride from San Francisco's Embarcadero. The ferry departs from Pier 33 in Fisherman's Wharf. You can choose any time to visit the You should arrive at least 30 minutes before your desired departure time to ensure boarding.

The tour of Alcatraz includes the 45 minute audio tour "Doing Time: The Alcatraz Cellhouse Tour" which features interviews and stories of prisoners and correctional officers who either worked or were incarcerated in the United States Penitentiary-Alcatraz. An orientation video, ranger-led tours and docent tours are also available.

Broadway-Alcatraz Island

Plan to spend 2-2.5 hours touring Alcatraz though you can spend as much as you want. Unfortunately there is no overnight option on the island (not any more).

Accessiblity NOTE: The approach to the main cellblock from the ferry landing is a steep incline. The path is 1/4 mile long with a 12% grade. Assistance is availabe through the park service.

Lost tickets will not be replaced. Alcatraz Cruises LLC is not responsible for tickets obtained from unauthorized sources which may not be valid. Ticket holders must be in designated boarding area 20 minutes prior to scheduled departure. Seats will be released 10 minutes prior to departure. Current ID and credit card are required to board. Seating is on a first come, first served basis. All carry-on items are subject to search. Restricted and dangerous articles may not be brought on board. Proper attire required. If you buy a ticket, you consent to have your image or likeness appear in any live or recorded video or other transmission or reproduction. Alcatraz Cruises LLC reserves the right to refuse service or remove passengers from a vessel, bus, event or premise if determined to be necessary for appropriate safety reasons, if you cause discomfort, inconvenience, or annoyance to passengers, crew members or agents, or if your behavior is deemed to threaten the safety, good, order or discipline. We reserve the right at any time to cancel tours or change departure or arrival times.
