Biodiesel Basics |
What is Biodiesel? Biodiesel is a non-petroluem based fuel for compression-ignition (Diesel) engines made from renewable organic raw materials as opposed to fossil hydrocarbons. Biodiesel is generally made with vegetable oil and can be used in most Diesel engines with little or no modifications. Because Biodiesel contains no petroleum it can be produced domestically, this could reduce our dependency on foreign energy sources. In contrast, Hybrid vehicles still require petroluem gasoline. Biodiesel is renewable, biodegradable, nontoxic, emits fewer Greenhous Gas (GHG) emssions.
How is Biodiesel made? Biodiesel is made through a chemical process called transesterification whereby glycerin is separated from the fat found in vegetable oils. The process leaves behind two products -- methyl esters (the chemical name for biodiesel) and glycerin (a valuable byproduct usually sold to be used in soaps and other products). Why should I use Biodiesel?
Because Biodiesel is a renewable and biodegradable fuel, it is considered better for the environment. Additionally, recent research by the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Program found that a B100 Biodiesel blend emits fewer GHG emissions mile-per-mile than any other fuel source. Biodiesel is as biodegradable as sugar and less toxic than table salt.
