White Water Rafting Tours
Physical Requirments for Whitewater Rafting
Just about anyone in reasonable health and fitness can go rafting. The minimum age for a child on a Class III river (under normal water flows) is 8 years old (and a minimum weight of 55 pounds) and 14 years old on a Class IV river. There is no maximum age although anyone over 60 should be in good health and perhaps consult with your physician if you have any concerns. If you are pregnant, extremely overweight, or have back or heart problems, we do not suggest a raft trip. Swimming skills are not a requirement since your safety jacket will keep you afloat but it is recommended that you not have a fear of the water.
When is the best time to go White Water Rafting?
Excellent rafting is available from April to October on dam controlled rivers such as the South Fork of the American. For thrill seekers looking for high water excitement we suggest booking your trip in May to early June when the melting snow is at its peak. Summer months of June, July and August are the most popular times to raft, especially on weekends. If you can schedule your trip during the midweek you will have the advantage of enjoying greater solitude on the river.
How are rivers classified for difficulty?
The difficulty of a river is classified on a scale of I to VI with I being very easy and VI unrunnable. We have classified the rivers based on normal moderate water flows but during times of high water difficulty levels can be increased. We recommend a Class III river for beginning rafters and a Class IV river for experienced rafters looking for more action. Class V river trips are reserved for expert, highly experienced rafters only.
Baja Sea Kayaking Tours
Physical Requirements for Baja
Paddling a sea kayak is comfortable and easy to learn. You glide silently across the water observing wildlife and the coastal environment close up. Anyone healthy and fit with a positive attitude can enjoy kayaking. The amount of paddling is a good balance of challenge and ease. Our premium quality, two-person kayaks are very stable and seaworthy. If this is your first adventure tour, and you are naturally a little apprehensive about going solo, we will support you each step of the way. Please call if you have any concerns.
Who Comes on Our Kayaking Tours
Our guests are active people seeking educational, once-in-a-lifetime experiences; yet health-promoting and relaxed vacations. They range in age from mid-teens to late-sixties. We get a mixture of singles, couples, families and friends. What they all share in common is a spirit of adventure and a willingness to experience the natural world on the most profound and intimate level.
Camping
We provide all the camping equipment you need, including warm, flannel, rectangular sleeping bags, roomy two-person dome tents, sleeping pads and tarps. You’ll be responsible for setting up and taking down your tent (we will happily help you with this) and packing up the camping gear.
Food and Water
We provide the all of the food and the chefs. Guest participation is always appreciated but not required. Everyone is responsible for washing their own dishes with our easy-to-use bucket system. We can only carry enough fresh water for drinking and cooking. There are no fresh water sources on most of the coastline and islands we visit, and we must strictly conserve fresh water for drinking and cooking. To bathe, we’ll bring up salt water from the sea, and soap up/rinse on land. For toilet facilities, we will carry a porta-pottie with us.
What to Bring
Once you have booked the trip and paid your deposit we will send you a complete suggested packing list. Basically you need your own personal gear, whatever makes you comfortable for camping and being on the water and in the sun. It’s a good idea to bring a couple of 1 liter water bottles so you have easy access to your own drinking water.
